Why We Choose Not To Use Paraffin Based Waxes

Why We Choose Not To Use Paraffin Based Waxes

Why We Choose a Cleaner Burn at HBC Organics

If you’ve been around HBC Organics for any amount of time, you know we tend to question the “normal” version of things. From skincare to home products, I’ve always believed that what we bring into our homes matters just as much as what we put on our skin.

Candles are one of those things.

They feel cozy, comforting, and grounding — but not all candles are created equal. Today I want to talk about the difference between paraffin candles vs coconut beeswax candles, the controversy around paraffin, and why we personally choose a coconut + beeswax blend.

This isn’t fear-based. It’s just about being informed and making intentional choices.

The Controversy Around Paraffin Candles

Most candles on store shelves are made with paraffin wax.

Paraffin is a byproduct of petroleum refining — the same industry that produces gasoline and other fossil fuel products. Because it’s inexpensive and holds fragrance well, it became the standard in mass-produced candles.

The controversy comes from a few concerns:

  • Air quality questions — Some studies and discussions have suggested paraffin candles may release small amounts of soot and volatile compounds when burned, especially if wicks aren’t trimmed or candles are low quality.

  • Petroleum origin — Many people simply prefer not to burn petroleum-derived products inside their homes.

  • Soot production — Paraffin candles are more likely to create visible black soot on jars, walls, and ceilings.

To be fair, not all paraffin candles are “toxic doom candles.” Many burn fine. But when given a choice, many people (myself included) lean toward more natural wax sources.

Why Wax Choice Matters

A candle isn’t just scent — it’s something you’re actively burning into your home environment.

If you’re someone who:

  • Loves slow evenings

  • Burns candles daily

  • Has kids or pets

  • Values low-tox living

Then wax choice becomes more meaningful.

That’s what led me down the rabbit hole years ago when choosing what would represent HBC candles.

The Beauty of Beeswax

Beeswax has been used in candles for centuries — long before paraffin ever existed.

It’s one of the most traditional candle materials we have.

Benefits of beeswax candles:

  • Naturally sourced from honey production

  • Burns very slowly

  • Minimal smoke when burned properly

  • Subtle natural honey scent

  • Warm, golden glow

Beeswax is often loved by people trying to simplify their homes and return to more traditional materials.

One thing I love about beeswax is that it feels timeless. There’s something really grounding about it.

Why Coconut Wax Is So Loved

Coconut wax is a newer addition to the candle world, but it’s quickly become a favorite in small-batch candle making.

It’s made from cold-pressed coconut oil that has been hydrogenated into a creamy wax.

Benefits of coconut wax:

  • Very clean burn

  • Excellent scent throw (without being overpowering)

  • Creamy, smooth texture

  • Renewable plant source

  • Less soot compared to paraffin

It also burns more evenly than many other plant waxes, which helps prevent tunneling.

Why We Love a Coconut + Beeswax Blend

If you’ve seen our Earthlight-style candles, you’ll notice we don’t use just one wax.

We use a coconut beeswax blend — and that’s very intentional.

Blending the two gives the best of both worlds:

✨ Longer burn time

Beeswax slows the burn while coconut keeps it even.

✨ Cleaner burn

Both waxes naturally produce less soot compared to paraffin.

✨ Beautiful glow

Beeswax gives that cozy amber warmth, while coconut smooths the melt pool.

✨ Better scent balance

Coconut wax helps carry fragrance gently without needing overpowering loads.

✨ More intentional ingredients

No petroleum base — just thoughtfully sourced waxes.

For me, it’s about creating something that feels good to light.

Not just smells good — feels good.

So… Are Paraffin Candles “Bad”?

I try not to live in extremes, and I never want this space to feel judgmental.

Many people burn paraffin candles and never think twice — and that’s okay.

But for our home, our brand, and the community we’ve built here, I prefer to lean toward:

  • Simpler ingredients

  • Traditional materials

  • Renewable sources

  • Thoughtful crafting

That’s always been the heart behind HBC Organics.

A Candle That Matches the Lifestyle

If you’ve followed our journey, you know this brand was never about chasing trends.

It’s always been about creating products that align with a slower, more intentional way of living.

Our coconut beeswax candles are part of that philosophy.

They’re meant to be:

  • Cozy but clean

  • Simple but elevated

  • Beautiful without compromise

Something you can light during:

  • Evening wind-downs

  • Bath rituals

  • Homestead mornings

  • Quiet moments after long days

Final Thoughts

At the end of the day, candles should bring comfort — not questions.

If you’ve been slowly swapping out products in your home for more intentional options, candles are a gentle place to start.

And if you’re not there yet? That’s okay too.

This space has always been about education, not pressure.

But if you’ve ever wondered why we choose coconut beeswax over paraffin…

Now you know the heart behind it.
