🌿 SPOTLIGHT SUNDAY: WHY WE LOVE AVOCADO OIL 🥑
For this week’s Spotlight Sunday, we’re talking about an ingredient you’ll find tucked into so many HBC Organics formulas: Avocado Oil.
And it’s there for a reason.
When I formulate a product, I don’t want ingredients included simply because they sound nice on a label. I want every ingredient to have a purpose — and avocado oil is one of those incredibly versatile oils I find myself reaching for again and again.
🥑 What makes avocado oil so special?
Avocado oil has a beautiful natural fatty-acid profile, including oleic and linoleic acids, along with naturally occurring vitamin E, carotenoids and phytosterols.
In skincare, these lipids help soften, condition and support the skin’s natural moisture barrier, which is why avocado oil can be such a wonderful choice for skin that feels dry, rough, tight or simply in need of a little extra love.
💧 Avocado oil is a “dry-feeling” oil — but what does that mean?
Calling something a dry oil sounds a little strange. After all…it’s still oil! 😂
“Dry” refers to the way an oil feels on the skin.
Rather than leaving behind an excessively heavy, greasy feeling, avocado oil can absorb beautifully into the skin and leave behind a soft, silky, conditioned feel.
That’s incredibly important to me when formulating body care.
I want you to be able to apply your lotion, body oil or skincare and actually go about your day — not feel like you’re coated in grease for the next three hours.
🌿 It helps soften & condition dry-feeling skin.
Avocado oil works as an emollient, helping smooth and soften the outer layers of the skin.
Plant oils can also help create a lipid-rich layer on the skin that slows moisture loss, helping your skin hold onto the hydration it already has.
This makes avocado oil especially lovely for:
✨ Dry or rough-feeling skin
✨ Skin that feels tight after bathing
✨ Dull-looking skin
✨ Hands, elbows, knees & other dry areas
✨ Winter-weather skincare
✨ Everyday head-to-toe moisturizing
🧬 It’s full of skin-loving fatty acids.
One of the things I love about working with natural oils is that every oil has its own fatty-acid composition — and that composition changes how it behaves in a formula.
Avocado oil contains a significant amount of oleic acid, along with linoleic acid and other fatty acids.
Those lipids are part of what gives avocado oil its rich, conditioning quality and makes it such a wonderful addition to moisturizers, body products and soap.
✨ Naturally occurring antioxidants
Avocado oil also contains naturally occurring tocopherols (vitamin E) and carotenoids, compounds known for their antioxidant properties.
Antioxidants are particularly interesting in skincare because they help combat oxidative stress caused by free radicals and environmental exposure.
It’s another reason I love choosing plant oils that offer more than simply an oily texture.
🌸 What about mature-looking skin?
This is another interesting area of avocado research.
Avocado oil has been studied for its potential effects involving inflammation, skin repair and collagen synthesis, particularly in laboratory and animal research.
That doesn’t mean avocado oil is a miracle anti-aging treatment — and I never want to make those kinds of promises about a natural ingredient.
But it does show us just how chemically interesting some of these seemingly simple plant oils really are.
🧼 AND THEN THERE’S AVOCADO OIL IN SOAP…
This might be one of my favorite ways to use it.
Avocado oil contributes something completely different once it’s incorporated into a thoughtfully formulated handmade soap recipe.
It helps create a bar that feels:
🫧 Silky
🫧 Creamy
🫧 Conditioning
🫧 Smooth against the skin
It’s part of that luxurious slip you can feel when you’re washing with a really beautiful handmade bar.
And when it’s paired with other carefully selected oils and butters, avocado oil can help us create a bar that cleanses while still giving you that wonderful silky, conditioned after-feel.
🥑 So why do we use avocado oil in SO many HBC Organics products?
Because it’s versatile.
Because it feels beautiful on the skin.
Because it helps soften and condition.
Because its fatty acids make it a wonderful ingredient for dry-feeling skin.
Because it naturally contains antioxidant compounds.
Because it works beautifully in leave-on skincare.
And because it makes one heck of a silky bar of soap. 🧼🥑
After years of formulating natural skincare, I’ve learned that the ingredients I love most aren’t necessarily the trendy ones.
They’re the ones I continue reaching for year after year because they earn their place in the formula.
Avocado oil is absolutely one of them.
So next time you flip over one of your HBC Organics products and see Avocado Oil / Persea Gratissima Oil on the ingredient list, you’ll know why it’s there.
🌿 It’s not filler. It’s there with purpose.
Happy Spotlight Sunday! 💚
